The Pulaski County Humane Society (PCHS) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that is registered with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services in accordance with the Virginia Solicitation of Contributions Law. We have been providing assistance to animals in need since 1979.

The mission of the Pulaski County Humane Society is to advance the welfare of animals in our community.

Our objectives are as follows:

  • Decrease pet overpopulation by providing education, spay/neuter and adoption programs.
  • Prevent animal cruelty and promote the humane treatment of animals through education, animal care and welfare programs, and public relations activities.
  • Provide valued, educationally focused advice and assistance.
  • Our vision is to reduce unwanted pets in our Community so that in the future no adoptable, healthy and/or treatable cats and dogs will be euthanized.

The Pulaski County Humane Society office is located in the Pulaski County Animal Shelter & Humane Education Center, which allows us to work side-by-side with Pulaski County Animal Control. We help provide medical care and other needs to make both PCHS and Animal Control animals as comforable as possible during their stay at the shelter. Unfortunately, the tragedy of pet overpopulation in the United States even spreads to our small community, so PCHS works to promote the adoption and rescue of these animals. We do everything we can to help prevent the euthanasia of adoptable pets.

In addition to helping the animals of Pulaski County, we also work to serve its people. On average, we receive over 300 calls for animal assistance each month. These calls are usually from people who are requesting our help with:

  • stray/hurt/ill animals
  • spay/neuter assistance
  • giving up pets
  • reporting animal abuse
  • adopting animals

We rely on donations and annual membership dues to fund our animal care, education, and assistance programs. Without donations from our supporters, more unwanted pets would end up in our county shelter and ill or injured pets would go without care. The PCHS has a number of regular supporters from the county and surrounding area, but we are in great need of additional volunteers and financial support from other caring people.
